The Delay of Cyberpunk 2077

April 25, 2020

< back to blog

Cyberpunk 2077 video game

"Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming role-playing first-person shooter video game, being developed and published by CD Projekt Red. The game is set in the dystopian metropolis of Night City. Following an economic collapse sometime in the early 21st century, the United States is forced to rely on large corporations to survive. These corporations deal in a wide range of areas, such as weapons, robotics, cybernetics, pharmaceuticals, communications and biotechnology, and many of these companies operate above the law. The game follows the story of V -- a hired mercenary on the rise in Night City, the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future."

Guys, typically at face value, this description wouldn't have been something I'd have found myself interested in. It just doesn't sound like the kind of game I'd typically play? But this game -- I'm absolutely excited for. It's the #1 game I'm hype for this year. If you've never heard of this game before in your life, I'm going to plug some videos you have to check out at the end of this post. You'll be blown away, I promise.

The aesthetic of this game is right up my alley: the bright, piercing, neon vibes and the bustling, dystopian, futuristic city...it's such eye candy.

Cyberpunk 2077 video game

Believe it or not, Cyberpunk 2077 was announced back in May of 2012. Yes, this game has been in development for quite some time. The game was supposed to be released April 16, 2020, which was only a few days ago. 😭 However, the release date was pushed back to September 17, 2020 -- which honestly, I'm not mad at. That's a few days after my birthday, so that's gonna be an awesome birth month present, and it'll be nice to play it during a time where the world may be in a slightly better place at least? Although, it would've been kinda bomb to play the game in quarantine.

The developers delayed the release because they felt that the game needed more work -- "We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but there's still work to be done." So ultimately, they're polishing things. And I'm totally here for it! I'd much rather a game be delayed and be ten times better at launch than to release earlier and be completely thrown together and clearly unfinished. **Cough, cough** I'm looking at you The Sims 4.

Cyberpunk 2077 video game

Since the game is being polished and more hard work is going into it, I'm sure it'll be phenomenal based on what I've already seen. There are quite a few things I'm looking forward to when this game drops.

Fun fact: As I was typing this blog up, I found out that Cyberpunk 2077 is actually going to have its own multiplayer title launching post-release in 2022! This is news to me, because I could've sworn the developers said multiplayer was out of the question? Guess they changed their mind, and I'm not mad about it at all. It is interesting that they're doing an entirely separate title for multiplayer, but in a way, I'd actually prefer that. Just wanted to throw this in here, because the following content you're about to read has changed based on me now knowing this.

Longevity

When I found out this was going to be a single-player, story-mode kinda game, longevity was a huge factor for me. I haven't played a really long story mode in a game in a long time, and if this is all this game is -- I wanted it to last for a long time! Especially if they've been working on this game for almost ten years? I don't want to play the entire story in a week and then be bored. But now that I know the game has a multiplayer title coming later on, I'm not even worried about the longevity of this game not living up to my standards, because I kind of consider the multiplayer title an extension of this. If they're confident with releasing the multiplayer game that much later, that tells me that this game will keep us occupied on its own until then. 👍🏾

Elements

I want the elements of the story, specifically, to draw me in. I want to be unquestionably captivated by what I'm playing. I don't feel like I've had a lot of that with video games in a long time, so I want this game to make it hard for me to focus on anything else. This is a choice-based game, and I live for those kinds of games. When it comes to choices in games, I want to feel nervous and scared of what might happen anytime I make a new choice - that's how you know a game is good: when it puts you on the spot and doesn't make it easy. Also, did you guys know that Keanu Reeves is a main character in this game? 🤯

Customization

Based on what I've already seen, the customization for this game looks extremely detailed. If you guys know me or read my "4 Elements I Thoroughly Enjoy In Video Games" post, you already know that I'm obsessed with customization -- especially when it comes to creating my own characters. Give me a ton of customization options to design my character down to the tiniest details, and I'm a happy camper. I do believe this game is gonna do just that, because so far, it looks like you can customize practically anything on and about your character and I can't lie -- I'll be super disappointed if I'm wrong.

Immersive Experience

When I play this game, I want to feel like I'm truly living in Night City f'ing ish up as my character. This game is first-person, so that will definitely play into the experience. But I feel like another thing that will make it super immersive is the choices we get to make in the game. In the promos for this game, they really home in on how you can play this game the way you actually want to play. According to the devs, you can even play through the entire story as a pacifist and not be physically violent towards anyone in the game if that's how you want to play. And that totally blows my mind based on what I've seen in the different trailers, because it seems like you have to be violent! That leads me to believe you really can play the way you want, and that makes for an immersive experience in my book.

Motivation

I want to feel inclined to play the story multiple times. For me, when it comes to choice-based, story-mode games, I never play them multiple times. I feel like the first choices I made the first time around is what I deserved. It's almost as if I believe that playing the story of these kinds of games more than once would lead to it feeling forced. Because then, I'm only making certain choices because I didn't the first time I played and not because I actually want to? So with this game, I want it to give me that motivation to want to play multiple times and strive for different endings.

Rewards

The more I play Cyberpunk, the more rewarded I want to feel. Games kinda suck when there isn't much to unlock or gain from playing, ya know? Makes me feel like I'm wasting my life. I want tons of unlockables, never-ending side missions -- the whole bit. Give me cool customization options to work for.

True Open World

There's nothing like feeling motivated to free roam an open world in a story-based game. GTA typically does a pretty good job of this, but after awhile, stealing people's cars and running people over gets kinda stale. I want Cyberpunk to take it up a notch. Give me a bunch of different buildings that I can go into to buy things or enhance/change something about my character. Let me have the option of playing minigames around the city. I want to be able to take my character to go grab food. If I follow a random NPC around Night City, I want to actually see them living their life -- not walking around aimlessly. I want to feel like Night City is alive and thriving around me outside of the story. I want the choices I make within the story to change the world around me in the most drastic and gradual ways possible.

Updates

Last, but definitely not least: give me some post-release updates to look forward to! The gaming world has changed -- back in the day, what you bought was what you got. Now, consistent updates at least for a few years after the release of a game is standard. I've heard that there will be expansions coming for this game later on, so the devs actually have a ton of opportunity to add some sick updates to this game, so I hope they don't fall short -- but I really don't think they will. I want new everything added -- especially more customization options and maybe even some side missions or new things to do around the city.
