Animal Crossing New Horizons: First Impressions

May 31, 2020

< back to blog

In two of my recent blogs, I told you guys how I had ordered a Nintendo Switch Lite, and then once it arrived, I gave my thoughts on the handheld. In both of those posts, I mentioned how Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the first game I was going to get and play, then afterwards, give my thoughts! So that's what we're gonna be discussing today. 🥰

Why was this the first game I decided to get?

Welp, I mentioned before that back when I'd play my Nintendo Wii a lot, I would remember seeing and hearing about Animal Crossing, but never ended up getting it. Since Animal Crossing: New Horizons has released on the Nintendo Switch, I've been hearing about it constantly all over the internet. So I felt very inclined to get it! That was actually the main reason I even decided to get a Nintendo Switch Lite. So here we are. 😊

I wasn't sure what to expect...

I wasn't completely sure what this game was all about. I had heard from people that this game was like The Sims? I wasn't completely sure about that, but I was open to trying it. If it would be anything like The Sims, I knew I'd like it, because I've always been a fan of that franchise. But I didn't understand the objective of this game. On the internet, I heard people complaining about some character named Tom Nook, talking about "bells", and all of these other random things. I was very curious to find out what everyone was blabbering about. 😂

 MY THOUGHTS!

Now that I've finally played the game myself (been playing for two weeks or so), I've formed my own judgments about this game. So first off, I'd like to say........this game isn't anything like The Sims (in my opinion). 😂 It's very similar to My Sims, which is a spinoff that EA created of The Sims. The reason I wouldn't say AC is like The Sims is because the objective of The Sims is literally to live life. You can use all of the objects in your home and around the world. From what I see, the objective of AC is to create and design an island which characters then move onto, etc. My Sims is almost a replica of this game, with the building objects and placing the characters' homes, etc. You also can barely use the objects in AC. They seem to be just for show, which is completely the opposite of The Sims games. But I mean, I'm cool with it? It doesn't make or break the game for me. However, I do wish I could use the objects.

I think that's my only real complaint with this game....I wish I could use the objects. I wish my character had needs that I had to fulfill. Yeah, you can use some of them, mainly the tools, but that's almost it. The game is very cute and relaxing, so I see what people mean by that. I do like how it's in sync with real time, so multiple days don't go by in the game during the bit of time that you're playing it. But I do also believe that that leaves me not feeling inclined to play this game for very long, because I find myself not being able to do a lot in one day for the few hours that I do play -- AT LEAST not in the beginning of the game while I'm getting my shops and everything built. I'm starting to notice that the more days that go by, the more there is for me to do. It just feels as if it's taking very long is all -- it leaves me feeling like I can't immerse myself in the game as much as I want to because I have to wait until the next real life day for something new to happen, which I'm honestly not used to.

On the other hand, I do see why everyone complains about Tom Nook. 😂 He really thought he was slick promising me all of these things he was gonna do for me and then turning around and telling me I owe him thousands of bells for "his services". Get out of here. ✋🏾 Basically, he's a con-artist. I guess he's kind of okay because he gives us time to pay him back, but give me a break dude?? My little villagers that have moved in so far are super cute and nice. I get tired of building a million things every day, but I think I'll like this game way more when I actually start designing my house and island more. Right now, it just feels like I'm working on paying off all these loans to Tom Nook that I never even asked for?????

In conclusion, the game is cute. I see why people like it. Do I think I'm gonna be completely obsessed with it the way a lot of other people are? Eh, time will tell. I'd say no, but then again, I haven't really gotten that far into the game. When I'm able to design to my full potential and really focus on making my island look a certain way, I could grow to truly love this game. I would design houses, schools, restaurants and more on The Sims for multiple days in a row back in the day and never even play in them. I was obsessed mainly with the building and interior decorating, for some reason. So I think once I'm able to do that, I could potentially become obsessed. I will do a blog post in the near future once I'm further along with my island and show you guys what I'm up to, what my character looks like, who lives on my island, and all that jazz.
