Is 2020 Over Yet?

August 21, 2020

< back to blog

2020 has been nothing short of uh.....absolutely insane? Catastrophic? Disastrous? Tragic? Simply awful? The list really does go on. There's not one person in this world that hasn't been affected by the completely unexpected occurrences this year threw at us all.

One thing this year made very clear is what truly matters at the end of the day - at least it did for me. It's not like I didn't already know what mattered, but it just really put those things into perspective. The simplest, most basic things in life is what's important. At the end of the day, how you treat yourself matters, the people you surround yourself with matters, your ability to maintain spending time with those in your household and better yet, with yourself matters. In the grand scheme of things, we saw that money is put on such a pedestal in this country - look at how easily stimulus checks were just sent to everyone...it kind of made it evident how money really is just paper and can be given out at any time and truly has no value in the grand scheme of things. Us, as humans, give these things value when at the end of the day....it's literally just paper.

This time has made a lot of people realize how when all is said and done, we're all just humans trying to make it, and we all have a lot more in common than we'd like to admit. It almost felt as if there wasn't as much of a "gap" between everyone because of all our differences, but rather more of a closeness because we all had to experience so many of the same hardships this year.

From COVID, to police brutality, to so many lives lost in the most tragic of ways, and everything in between....2020 has forced me to take a step back and reevaluate so many things. I had this year all planned out. "This is gonna be the year I step out of my shell and do so many things I've always wanted to do." I created a bucket list. I brainstormed all of the different ways I was going to accomplish all of these newly curated goals. If only I had known what was to come. Nonetheless...I still haven't let that stop me though. I have been more resilient than I could've ever imagined this year. Every downfall I faced whether it was getting into a car accident, almost losing my job, getting into a fight with someone I loved, gaining more weight than I ever planned to....I bounced back and I handled it, like a fricken' boss. And I encourage you all to do the same.

You might have to make some changes and adjustments - maybe you already have. But what's most important is not letting the restrictions and setbacks of this year stop you from accomplishing something you can be proud of this year. Want to lose weight? Exercise (even if it's in your home). Want to write more? Get to it! Want to start meditating? Practice every morning. Want to get closer to your loved ones? Spend some valuable time with them, even if it's virtually. You may not be able to do everything you planned on doing this year, but you can do something. Even it's a small win - if it's something that you've been wanting to do and have the means to do...why wait? You might not be able to do it exactly how you imagined doing it, but it can still be done.

Take losing weight for example. I've lost a ton of weight this year. When I initially decided that I was going to take control of my body and stop being so reckless with what I ate and not being active enough, I imagined being at the gym. My plan was to go to the gym every week, and I had an entire schedule and idea of how everything would work laid out in my head. I had no idea that plan would come to a halt. I never believed that I could lose the amount of weight I did working out in the house and basically using my own body weight to lose weight, but I did it. I made a goal, got someone to hold me accountable, and got to work - regardless of how limiting this year has been to me.

I say all of this to say....I truly believe that this time can be used to accomplish great things. Even if it's something small. I also believe that we will be back on lockdown soon in this country, because people just don't wanna listen. Take a step back and figure out something attainable that would make you very happy to accomplish before 2021 is here and work towards it every day, every week, whenever. 2020 will be over sooner than we know it. Will things be better in 2021? Who knows. Hopefully. But even if they aren't - we still have control over so many other things in our lives that we overlook on a regular basis. I promise you, it'll feel so much more rewarding on December 31st to say that you did something you've been wanting to do for a while now, than to look back on a year and feel like you wasted it because you felt like you didn't have as much control over your life as you do.

PS: Speaking of accomplishing things, I have a lot of great content for you guys coming sooner than you know. Stay tuned. ✌🏾💋
