Spooktober Fest (October 2020 Playlist)

October 18, 2020

< back to blog

Hello all.

Welcome to Spooktober Fest.

I think I told you guys forever ago that I would eventually be creating public playlists of music for you all to enjoy. That time has now come.

I knew I wanted to create a fall (specifically October) inspired playlist, and I didn't know if I wanted to go for a chill, R&B, cuffing season vibe, or a spooky, creepy, eerie Halloween "I'll be killed by dawn" vibe.

I'm still highly interested in doing that first idea in the near future.

Once I decided on the second idea, Spooktober Fest was born.

Funnel cakes, games, and rides, oh my. 🎢🎃✨

Spooktober Fest is a playlist that I've created for you all to enjoy this fine October of 2020, or whenever you choose to. When I was brainstorming exactly what I wanted this playlist to consist of, I instantly thought of how I typically visit this local amusement park in my city every October. Every time I go, there's always breezy, cool air, the smell of funnel cakes, and different spooky, carnival-style songs blending together from the different areas of the park. Along with haunted houses, tons of Halloween/Fall decor, and gusts of cold wind hitting your face as the rollercoasters zoom by above your head as you're walking through the park. It's such a vibe. Being a September baby, I really love summer, but I really love fall. 🍂

My tradition of going to the amusement park this year came to a sudden hault when COVID-19 caused the park to be closed for the entirety of 2020. I wanted to pay homage to that time by creating my own little spooky "digital amusement park/carnival/fair" with this playlist. When you're listening to it, I want you to imagine exactly what I just described. That you're walking through an amusement park in October, the cold wind is hitting your face, the smell of carnival-style foods are swirling around you, and you and your favorite people are about to go to tons of haunted houses and ride a bunch of rides in the park. Oh, and don't forget to run from all of the monsters, ghouls, and clowns chasing you throughout the park. 😉🤡

To locate this playlist, you will need to have the Spotify app downloaded. Hopefully, you have Spotify premium, so you don't have to deal with any pesky ads. Search my username, varietyprincess, and you should see the playlist on my profile.

You can also click here to be taken directly to your handy dandy October playlist.

spooktober fest playlist

The playlist consists of 14 songs and is about an hour in length of time. I was going to do way more, but I kind of like that it's concise. I was also going to stop at 13 songs to go with the "horror" vibe, but eh, I have 14. It's fine.

Some of the songs have lyrics and beats that are pretty creepy. Some have lyrics that are creepy, but the beat isn't as eerie as some of the other songs. Others have lyrics that aren't creepy at all, but the beat is pretty spooky-esque - so I decided to keep it anyways. I just think that all of these songs would be perfect for the scene I just described. Each song playing in different areas of the park.

Also -- I should note: This playlist consists of different genres of music. So you're going to hear old songs, new songs, pop, rock, rap, you name it.

As for the songs.....

Secret - The Pierces

For all of my Pretty Little Liars fans out there... this is the theme song of the show. "Got a secret, can you keep it? Swear this one you'll save...better lock it in your pocket, taking this one to the grave." 🤫 This song has always been pretty eerie to me, and it's supposed to be. After all, it's the theme song of one of the most iconic TV thrillers to date. I will say...listening to the full song was a lot creepier than listening to the snippet of it at the beginning of PLL. It's actually a lot creepier than I thought it was. 🤨

Formula Labrinth

A song from another one of my favorite shows...Euphoria! This song was in the score of Euphoria. Honestly, some of you might not consider this song to be very creepy. But I could totally see this being played at some fall carnival. Maybe on the Himalaya ride. So it totally fits the vibe I was going for. Every time I listen to it, I feel kind of like I'm being chased or something, lol. The beat is amazing and Labrinth completely murders (no pun intended 🔪) this song, as he does with every song.

I Got 5 On It - Tethered Mix from "US"

If you've seen Jordan Peele's movie "US", you already should know what this song is. Super eerie. The bass and background instrumentals for this song is out of this world. It's a mix of the 1995 song I Got 5 On It, and it completely turned the original song upside down on its head. Listen to this on full blast in your car if you get the chance. Thank me later.

Back It Up - Colette Carr

This is a song I discovered on Teen Nick years ago. 👀 It's definitely a more poppy spooky song. But I remember seeing Colette Carr perform this song on "The Nightlife" back in like 2010, and the performance was weird af. The music video is too. So it deserves to be on this playlist. This song is definitely fun to dance to as well. I still don't know what the hell the lyrics are talking about though, lol. I've been trying to figure it out for years and still have no idea whatsoever. So if any of you figure it out, let me know.

Disturbia - Rihanna

You guys already know this song. I'm sure of it. But for those of you that don't, this song is definitely pretty questionable and kind of leaves you wondering if something's gonna come eat you for dinner before the end of the night. You probably shouldn't watch the music video if you don't wanna be creeped out and potentially have nightmares.

If U Seek Amy - Britney Spears

This song isn't really scary, but something about it has an eerie vibe. I'm still not sure who the heck Amy is, but all I know is, all of the girls and all of the boys wanna F Britney. Or maybe she's just really trying to locate Amy. The world may never know. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Thriller - Michael Jackson

This song doesn't need to be introduced or explained, because if you don't know what this is, I really don't know what to tell you.

Funhouse - Pink

One of the main reasons I chose this song is because the amusement park I was telling you guys about at the beginning of this post always plays this song. Every single year. Specifically in the clown section of the park. Probably because of the line in the song that says, "This used to be a funhouse. But now it's full of evil clowns." So I had to throw it in here. For old times' sake.

Paranoid - I Prevail

Let me just say...I love this song. It's very well done. "Something isn't right, I feel it in my bones. Every time I look around, it follows me home." Fun fact: every time I listen to this song, I like to pretend like I'm in a psychologically thrilling music video. 😅

Take It Off Kesha

This is one of my favorite Kesha songs. And quite frankly, I think the lyrics and beat are Spooktober Fest worthy. "When the dark of the night comes around that's the time that the animal comes alive looking for something wild." This one is another that's pretty great to dance to.

Freaks Come Out At Night - Whodini

So...............I have to be honest. I was totally thinking of the Scooby Doo Movie when i threw this one in here. Ya know, their first night at Spooky Island? Even though that was a different version of the song, but this is the original, so there's that. A little sprinkle of nostalgia for all you cool kids that watched the Scooby Doo Movie as much as I did in the early 2000s.

Monster - Kanye West FT. Jay Z, Bon Iver, Rick Ross, & Nicki Minaj

Oh, the countless times I've rapped Nicki's verse in this song from beginning to end. "Okay, first things first, I'll eat your brains. Then imma start rocking gold teeth and fangs. 'Cause that's what a motherf*%$#@! monster do." This song will make you want to be the monster, rather than getting chased by it all night. 👹

Halloween Theme - John Carpenter

Shout out to my best friend, because I know she's probably gonna be more excited about this being on the playlist than anybody else. 💀 If you're a fan of the "Halloween" movies, or maybe even not, you've heard this song at least once in your life time. So when you're at Spooktober Fest, and this song starts playing, pretend like Michael Myers is chasing you through the park.

She Wolf Shakira

This song takes me back to the good ol' days of 2009. The belly dancing queen herself, Shakira. This song sounds more eerie than it actually is, because Shakira definitely isn't talking about anything frightening in this song. 🐺

Bad Guy Billie Eilish

I was today years old when I heard this song. No, but seriously, I actually hadn't heard this song in its entirety until today. I had heard it in bits and pieces countless times, but I never sat down and listened to it, because quite frankly...Billie Eilish's music is a tad bit toooooo DARK for my particular tastes, and I'm usually not super picky, but whew. I can't listen to that stuff on a regular basis. 😂 However, I digress. This one, I can dig. I actually really love it a lot. So does my bird. 😁

That wraps up the playlist. Make sure you guys follow me on Spotify and also follow the playlist. Have fun at the Spooktober Fest, and let me know your thoughts down below in the comments. **If you have any ideas for types of playlists you'd like me to do in the future, be sure to let me know and I'll try to make it happen.**

Happy listening. 👻

Great post! This is a really cool idea. I’ll definitely be checking it out as i can see there are quite a few of my favorites on the list. I think the Halloween theme is probably the creepiest song I’ve ever heard in my life and I’ve already heard it quite a few times this month lol.
